POWERHOUSE SEASONAL STAFF

New York Stage and Film hires SEASONAL DEPARTMENT HEADS and ASSISTANTS for the annual summer season of new plays and musicals at the Powerhouse Theater at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Powerhouse Season supports 2 fully-produced mainstage productions, 3 musical workshops, 2 play workshops, up to 10 readings, and a few residency projects in a flexible environment tailored to meet each project’s developmental needs. Positions generally run from early June to early August. Salary and free on-campus housing provided, as well as access to campus resources such as the gym and library.

Company Management

The Company Manager will coordinate travel and housing, special events, and all day-to-day company needs for 300+ professional artists for the 2020 Powerhouse Season. This person will supervise a staff of assistants and interns. They must have strong communication skills and a good attitude.  Must be highly-organized, detail-oriented, and extremely friendly. Prior artist relations and/or event management experience required.  Company Management experience and a passion for theater/film development is a plus. Position runs from mid-May to early August.

The Associate Company Manager and Assistant Company Manager will support the Company Manager in all company needs for 300+ professional artists for the 2020 Powerhouse Season, including travel, housing, special events, and day-to-day activities. They will help supervise four interns. Must be highly-organized, detail-oriented, extremely friendly, and have strong communication skills. Prior artist relations and/or event management experience a plus. 

The department is supported by four Company Management Interns.

 

Costumes

The Costume Supervisor oversees all aspects of Department including: participating in production meetings with designers and management, ordering/rental/purchase of all necessary costume items and equipment, attending technical and dress rehearsals and performances as needed, supervising load-ins, wardrobe needs, running strikes for all mainstage and workshop productions, and guiding the junior staff in their roles as technical assistants and interns. Successful candidates will work with world-class designers on a tight timeline and budget. Previous costume supervisor experience preferred.

The Assistant Costume Supervisor supports the Costume Supervisor with ordering/rental/purchase of all necessary costume items and equipment, attending technical and dress rehearsals and performances as needed, load-ins, wardrobe needs, strikes for all mainstage and workshop productions, and leading the intern team. Previous experience preferred.

The department is supported by three Costume Interns.

 

Lighting and Electrics

The Lighting Supervisor oversees all aspects of Department including: participating in production meetings with designers and management, ordering/rental/purchase of all necessary lighting equipment, attending technical and dress rehearsals and performances as needed, supervising load-ins, hangs and focuses of all electrics, running strikes for all mainstage and workshop productions, and guiding the junior staff in their roles as technical assistants. The Lighting Supervisor will manage a Master Electrician, Assistant Master Electrician, and a number of interns. Successful candidates will work with world-class designers on a tight timeline and budget. Previous experience as a lighting supervisor or venue Master Electrician preferred.

The Master Electrician and Assistant Master Electrician will assist Lighting Supervisor in ordering/rental/ purchase of all necessary lighting equipment, attending technical and dress rehearsals and performances as needed, working on load-ins, hangs and focuses of all electrics, lights, and sound, and working on strikes for all mainstage and workshop productions.  Will help supervise a team of four interns. Previous experience preferred.

The Lighting Technician will work closely with the Master Electricians to ensure the safe and timely load in and strike of all lighting related equipment for each event in three venues. The Lighting Technician will also run shows/events on an as needed basis and generally support the successful operation of the Lighting Department throughout the 2020 Powerhouse Season. Duties include but are not limited to; leading a crew of three interns during load in and strike of electrics gear, assisting in implementation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of all electrics related aspects of each venue, running shows and/or overseeing intern operators as needed. 

The department is supported by three Lighting Interns.

 

Production Management

The Production Manager will work with the NYSAF senior staff and designers to oversee the budgeting and execution of all production elements, including sets, lights, costumes, properties, sound, and projections for the 2020 Powerhouse Season. They will supervise all technical department staff and manage an Assistant Production Manager and one intern. Duties include, but are not limited to: participate in production meetings; attend technical and dress rehearsals and performances, as needed; establish and adhere to a production schedule for all departments; supervise draft, build, load-in and strike of all production elements; equipment inventory and documentation; cost reporting, etc. In addition, safety training, vendor negotiation, budgetary, and technical skills are a must. Previous PM experience required. Successful candidates will work with world-class designers on a tight timeline and budget. Position runs from May to early August, with moderate communication beginning early in 2020.

 

The Assistant Production Manager will support the Production Manager to oversee the budgeting and execution of all production elements for the 2020 Powerhouse Season. They supervise workshop productions as assigned, and co-supervise two interns. They will also schedule and advise the Stage Management interns in coordination with the Artistic Producer. Duties include, but are not limited to: participate in and lead production meetings; attend technical and dress rehearsals and performances, as needed; manage and maintain production budget and expense tracking; work with PM to supervise technical staff, establish production schedule, equipment inventory and documentation, etc.  Successful candidates will work with world-class artists on a tight timeline and budget.  Position runs from May to early August, with mild communication beginning early in 2020.

The department is supported by one Production Intern.

 

Properties

The Properties Supervisor oversees all aspects of Department including: participating in production meetings with designers and management; building/acquiring all properties for mainstage productions, workshops and readings; attending technical and dress rehearsals and performances as needed; supervising load-ins, prop needs, running strikes for all mainstage and workshop productions, and guiding the junior staff in their roles as technical assistants and interns. Successful candidates will work with world-class designers on a tight timeline and budget. Previous properties supervisor experience preferred.

The Assistant Properties Supervisor supports the Properties Supervisor in all aspects of Department including: production meetings with designer and management; building/acquiring all properties for the 2020 Powerhouse Season; attending technical and dress rehearsals and performances as needed; facilitating load-ins, prop needs, running strikes, and helping to supervise two interns. Successful candidates will work with world-class designers on a tight timeline and budget. Previous  experience preferred.

The department is supported by one Production Intern.

 

Scenic

The Scenic Charge will run and maintain the paint department, as well as timely execute all assigned scenic painting for the 2020 Powerhouse Season, as directed by the Production Manager, Technical Director, and Scenic Designers. Responsibilities may include, but not be limited to: managing all paint needs and communications, budgeting, regular paint calls including overnight calls if required, touch-up work, treatment work, properties painting, and both in-shop and on-set painting. The Scenic Charge will properly maintain department facilities and equipment, and supervise one paint intern. Successful candidates will work with world-class designers on a tight timeline and budget. Previous experience preferred. 

The Master Carpenter will support the Technical Director and facilitate the build of all scenic elements for the 2020 Powerhouse Season. With the Assistant Technical Director, the Master Carpenter will supervise a small team of carpentry interns and over hires. They will assist with build, load in, and strike of all scenic elements; as well as help maintain department shops and equipment. Successful candidates will have experience in wood construction and counterweight rigging. Previous experience required.

The department is supported by one Paint Intern and three Carpentry Interns.

 

Sound

The Sound Supervisor oversees all aspects of Department including: participating in production meetings with designers and management, ordering/rental/purchase of all necessary sound equipment, attending technical and dress rehearsals and performances as needed, supervising load-ins, hangs and focuses of all necessary equipment, running strikes for all mainstage and workshop productions, and supervising a staff of an Assistant Supervisor, two Sound Technicians, and two interns. Successful candidates will work with world-class designers on a tight timeline and budget. Previous sound supervisor experience preferred.

The Assistant Sound Supervisor is responsible for aiding the Sound Supervisor in maintaining all audio related aspects of NYSAF’s three venues and generally ensuring smooth operation of the sound department throughout the 2020 Powerhouse Season. Duties include but are not limited to; overseeing execution and success of live sound reinforcement and playback during various events in multiple venues as needed, assisting the Sound Supervisor in coordinating with creative teams and production staff to fully realize show designs/ requirements within the capabilities of the department, managing a crew of three interns during load in and load out. Proficiency with AutoCAD or Vectorworks required; prior live mixing experience preferred.

The Sound Technician will work closely with the Assistant Sound Supervisor to ensure the safe and timely load in and strike of all audio related equipment for each event in three venues. The Sound Technician will also run shows/events on an as needed basis and generally support the successful operation of the Sound Department throughout the 2020 Powerhouse Season. Duties include but are not limited to; leading a crew of three interns during load in and strike of audio gear, assisting in implementation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of all audio related aspects of each venue, running shows and/or overseeing intern operators as needed. Experience with analog and digital mixing consoles, and understanding of basic audio terminology and signal flow required. Prior live mixing experience preferred.

The department is supported by two Sound Interns.

 

Technical Direction

The Technical Director will work with the Production Manager and designers to oversee the budgeting and build of all scenic elements for the 2020 Powerhouse Season.  They will lead the construction of sets throughout tech and production and will manage an Assistant Technical Director, one master carpenter, three carpentry interns and over hires, as well as a scenic charge artist.  Duties include, but are not limited to: draft, build, load in, and strike of all scenic elements for the 2020 Powerhouse Season; as well as maintenance of department shops and equipment.  In addition, safety training, vendor negotiation, budgetary, and technical skills are a must.  Previous TD experience required.  Successful candidates will work with world-class designers on a tight timeline and budget.

The Assistant Technical Director will support the Technical Director to oversee the budgeting, drafting and construction of all scenic elements for the 2020 Powerhouse Season. With the Master Carpenter, the ATD will supervise a small team of carpentry interns and over hires. They will assist with build, load in, and strike of all scenic elements; as well as help maintain department shops and equipment. Successful candidates will have experience in wood construction, AutoCAD drafting, counterweight rigging, and leadership. Previous experience required.
